Near balanceFormula-derived score

American inventor-manufacturer (1847–1931) who ran Menlo Park and West Orange as paid invention factories. The most recent verified record is “William Kemmler is executed in New York’s first electric chair amid Edison’s AC campaign” (6 August 1890), linked to the driver Judicial Independence.

Editorial assessment (context, not the score)

The record is not a secular saint of light and not a cartoon thief of Tesla’s notebook. The heaviest documented costs are the anti-AC campaign and electric-chair publicity, the MPPC film combination, Topsy’s filmed killing, Ogden ore, DC lock-in, and the 1914 fire. Those rest on company products, park files, and contemporaneous accounts, not on pamphlets alone.

The offsets are also documents: Menlo Park, the 1878 phonograph patent, the 1880 lamp patent, Pearl Street in 1882, the carbon transmitter, and later batteries and cement. Swan, Tesla, Westinghouse, Dickson, Armat, and Morgan remain on the file.

He does not set U.S. energy statute and he does not run a ministry of culture. Confidence is high on patents, the station date, and the 1908 combination, and only medium where bonus legends, unique-genius claims, or later HVDC are chained to 1883 franchises.

What the papers actually show

Thomas Edison is not a ministry of energy, and this dossier should not pretend he is. The usable record is patents, company minutes, a generating station, court dockets, a film catalogue, and later park interpretation. U.S. Patent 200,521 (opens in a new tab) and U.S. Patent 223,898 (opens in a new tab) are federal instruments. Pearl Street (opens in a new tab) is a utility opening. The Library of Congress Edison collection (opens in a new tab) holds the film and sound side.

What went wrong, and what is proven

The 1888–90 current-war publicity (opens in a new tab) framed alternating current as a killing technology, including animal demonstrations and association with Kemmler’s 6 August 1890 execution (opens in a new tab). Edison Manufacturing sold Electrocuting an Elephant (opens in a new tab) after Topsy’s 4 January 1903 killing. The Motion Picture Patents Company (opens in a new tab) of 18 December 1908 pooled film patents against independents. Ogden ore milling destroyed capital and labour time. The 9 December 1914 West Orange fire (opens in a new tab) was a workplace disaster on his campus. Poured-concrete houses did not become mass shelter. DC neighbourhood lock-in raised the cost of serving distant load.

Those paths rest on patents, park files, and contemporaneous reporting. They do not require a theory of deafness or of a cruel temperament. They require a distinction between a lamp patent and a trust.

What improved, and how far

The offsets are also documents. Menlo Park (1876) and West Orange (1887) are NPS-interpreted laboratories (opens in a new tab). The 1874 quadruplex, 1877 carbon transmitter, 1878 phonograph, 1880 lamp, and 1882 Pearl Street station are dated. Alkaline batteries and long rotary cement kilns are smaller industrial paths. The 1915 Naval Consulting Board (opens in a new tab) is advisory mobilisation, mixed in sign.

Joseph Swan, Tesla, Westinghouse, Dickson, and Armat share several of those files. Sharing is not a reason to drop Edison’s patents, and it is not a reason to award them at royal-decree weight.

Shared responsibility, and what this does not say

J.P. Morgan’s capital, GE after 1892, city franchises, and unnamed glassblowers are not extras. A 49-state grid is not available in 1882; a district station is. A film trust is not a camera. A camera is not a trust.

The dossier does not say that Edison stole the lamp from a lone forgotten genius in a way the 1880 patent file cannot support. It does not say that Tesla’s later myth cancels Pearl Street. It does not say that a 1929 jubilee caused the crash. Confidence is high where a patent, station log, or NPS fire page names the instrument, and medium where later magazines, seating guesses, or bonus legends stand between the paper and a welfare indicator.

See also the Rutgers Edison Papers (opens in a new tab) and Britannica’s biography (opens in a new tab). Those URLs are identity-adjacent independent and archival carriers, not Wikipedia as a causal source.

Pearl Street is not the lamp patent. The lamp patent is not the MPPC. Topsy is not Kemmler. A 1929 banquet is not a station log. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a wizard statue and the alternative to a theft pamphlet.

Assistants remain named because a laboratory payroll is the actual mechanism of most devices. Charles Batchelor, John Kruesi, Francis Upton, and W.K.L. Dickson are not colour. Joseph Swan’s British lamp, Tesla’s AC motors, and Armat’s projector are not rumours. J.P. Morgan’s capital is not a footnote to a portrait.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original patent with a different inventor and date; a Pearl Street log that the station did not open on 4 September 1882; an MPPC minute that Edison patents were not pooled; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of one of these instruments rather than of urban growth, other utilities, or later holding companies. Until then, the dossier refuses fake uniqueness and refuses fake innocence.

The live related people are laboratory, rival, financier, and later industrial users. Some will be created as identities where missing, then later enriched if they receive their own dossiers. That is how a live graph grows without inventing meetings in 1882. Off-family indicator padding — a health series nailed to a phonograph without a mechanism — is refused.

Readers who want a wizard will be disappointed on purpose. Readers who want only a theft pamphlet will also be disappointed: Pearl Street, the phonograph patent, and the carbon transmitter sit on the same graph as the MPPC and Topsy, with different dates and different drivers. The poll on the related article asks which documented act should weigh most. That is a reader question. The park door remains https://www.nps.gov/edis/index.htm (opens in a new tab). The lamp text remains https://patents.google.com/patent/US223898A (opens in a new tab). The station article remains https://ethw.org/Pearl_Street_Station (opens in a new tab).
