Edison carbon-button transmitter enters telephone practice via Western Union
In 1877 Edison’s carbon-button transmitter made the telephone commercially audible. Western Union used it; patent conflict with Bell interests followed. In the causal graph this event strengthens Digital Learning Access, a driver that weakens Learning Poverty Rate (low- and middle-income countries) — an improving welfare path.

In 1877 Edison’s carbon-button transmitter made the telephone commercially audible. Western Union used it; patent conflict with Bell interests followed. This Fact is the transmitter, not the invention of the telephone.
Context
Bell’s 1876 patent is a different person. Edison’s transmitter is why many early phones worked in noisy rooms. Courts and companies later pooled interests.
Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Communications-access path. High confidence on the device and year.
A transmitter is not a telephone patent. Name Bell as related, not as a theft cartoon.
Who was responsible
Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.
Thomas Edison
PersonDirect responsibility
responsibility level 0.7 · verified
He invented the carbon transmitter used to make Bell’s telephone audible at distance. Western Union and later Bell interests commercialised it; litigation followed.

What the sources establish
Edison Papers and IEEE/ETHW independently date the 1877 carbon transmitter.
Established: 1877 Edison carbon telephone transmitter in commercial use. Not established: that Edison invented the telephone, or that Bell’s patent is invalid.
