Edison laboratories work on wartime chemicals and naval detection devices

After April 1917 Edison’s laboratories and the Naval Consulting Board turned to naval detection, smoke, and chemical-industrial problems of the U.S. war effort. In the causal graph this event weakens Humanitarian Access, a driver that strengthens People Internally Displaced by Conflict and Violence (IDMC) — an improving welfare path.

After April 1917 Edison’s laboratories and the Naval Consulting Board turned to naval detection, smoke, and chemical-industrial problems of the U.S. war effort. This is a dated mobilisation of a private lab, not a claim that Edison invented poison gas.

Context

Phenol and other chemical bottlenecks were real. Military-industrial conversion has welfare costs even when framed as defence.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Wartime-industrial path. Medium confidence on humanitarian sign; high on the mobilisation itself.

Mobilisation is not the same as a war crime file.

Who was responsible

  • Direct responsibility

Complex: Navy and War Department demand plus Edison lab work. Not a sole-author war.

    Improving path

    impact weight 0.55 · Effect from 1 April 1917 · verified

Diverting an industrial laboratory to naval killing and blockade-adjacent chemistry is a humanitarian-access risk path in wartime production.
