In 1893 Westinghouse used Tesla’s alternating-current system to light the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Tesla presented demonstrations. It is a dated fair installation, not a national grid.

Context

The fair was a publicity and engineering contest with General Electric’s camp. Success there fed the Niagara contract. Unnamed Westinghouse shop men ran the plant. Sharing is not a reason to drop Tesla’s patents from the file.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Public-proof path for an energy standard. High confidence on the fair lighting.

A fair is not Niagara. Keep 1893 and 1895 on separate rows.

Complex: Westinghouse manufacture and Tesla’s patents and demonstrations. Direct sole lighting of Chicago is the wrong type.

What the sources establish

IEEE/ETHW’s Tesla page and Smithsonian’s current-war essay independently date Westinghouse/Tesla AC at the 1893 fair.

Established: Westinghouse AC lighting at the 1893 Columbian Exposition using Tesla-system apparatus. Not established: that Tesla personally installed every lamp, or that DC vanished that summer.
