Tesla publicises a mechanical oscillator as if it could shake a building or a city
Around 1898 Tesla publicised experiments with a mechanical oscillator, including later-told stories of resonating his laboratory building. In the causal graph this event weakens Social Cohesion, a driver that strengthens Having a say in government — a worsening welfare path.

Around 1898 Tesla publicised experiments with a mechanical oscillator, including later-told stories of resonating his laboratory building. The tales became part of the wizard file. No independent structural survey in the sources cited here shows a city block destroyed.
Context
Vibration and resonance are real physics. A press-ready earthquake machine is an overclaim.
Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Public-overclaim path. Medium confidence on any one building story; high that oscillator publicity existed.
An oscillator is not Kemmler. Electrocution association belongs on Edison’s page.
Who was responsible
Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

responsibility level 0.7 · verified
He told the oscillator story as a laboratory feat. Police and later journalists repeated it. No city was demolished.

Public claims that a pocket oscillator could wreck urban fabric are documented overclaims that substitute spectacle for measured structural engineering.

What the sources establish
IEEE/ETHW notes Tesla’s vibration and resonance work and growing empirical spectacle. Smithsonian’s life essay independently treats the later wizard image as mixed with unbuilt claims.
Established: Tesla publicised oscillator/resonance experiments in the late 1890s. Not established: that he uniquely caused an earthquake in Manhattan, or that a city-killing machine was demonstrated to a named police captain in a surviving official report cited here.
