On 3 August 2024 the CPV Central Committee elected Tô Lâm general secretary, two weeks after Nguyễn Phú Trọng died on 19 July. State media reported a unanimous vote. In his first speech he said taking the reins was an urgent need to ensure party leadership and that he would maintain blazing furnace and bamboo diplomacy.
