On 9 March 1765 the royal council broke the Toulouse judgment that had broken Jean Calas on the wheel (1762) and rehabilitated him. Voltaire’s pamphlets and subscriptions were the public machinery.

Context

A Protestant father had been executed on a suicide-as-murder theory. Publicity forced a reopening. Absolutist mercy is still a justice gain relative to the original court. Traité sur la tolérance (1763) is a related but separate book Fact.

Voltaire is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

What the sources establish

Britannica’s Calas article and the Oxford Voltaire Foundation independently document the campaign and the 1765 result.

Established: Calas was rehabilitated in 1765 after Voltaire’s campaign. Not established: that every later French due-process statute is this pamphlet.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here. Confidence is stated on the impact path.
