Context
The Surinam episode can be an improving literary denunciation of slavery while company rents sit on another row. Lisbon 1755 is the earthquake background, not this colophon.
Voltaire is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Knowledge-access path. High confidence on 1759.
A satire can denounce a trade the author still took rents from. Split those Facts.

He wrote the tale. Clandestine printers issued it. Complex: later school editions are other people’s instruments.

What the sources establish
Gallica’s French printings and Gutenberg’s English independently document the work. Different languages, same tale.
Established: Candide was printed in 1759. Not established: that 1759 mortality in war theatres fell because of a tale.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here. Confidence is stated on the impact path.
