On 1 January 1722 François-Marie Arouet inherited three shares in the Compagnie des Indes, a company that in those decades combined Asian trade with African slave-trade privileges. Later letters boast of company income. This Fact stores that dated inheritance and continued holding. It does not invent a Voltaire-commanded slaving voyage.
Context
Candide’s Surinam page can denounce slavery while the same author’s fortune includes company rents. Both can be true; they are split across Facts. History Workshop Journal 2022 and Nantes’s port museum independently frame the company as a slave-trade actor. Confidence on any single later ship (Saint-Georges, Cadiz) stays medium unless the contract is quoted.
Voltaire is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Humanitarian-harm path via colonial company rents. Medium confidence on personal knowledge of named cargoes, high on the holding.
A company share is not a philosophical letter.

What the sources establish
Peer-reviewed HWJ archival synthesis and Nantes’s public slave-trade museum independently describe the company’s traffic.
Established: he inherited and held Compagnie des Indes shares from 1722.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
