French snap election ends with no parliamentary majority

National Assembly (France)

A left alliance won the most seats, Macron's centrists placed second and the National Rally finished third, leaving a hung National Assembly.

Report

France's early parliamentary election concluded on 7 July 2024 without any bloc winning an absolute majority in the National Assembly. The left-wing New Popular Front alliance secured the largest number of seats, President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition placed second and the National Rally and allies third.

The result differed sharply from first-round vote shares and many forecasts because France uses two-round constituency contests. Hundreds of candidates withdrew between rounds to reduce three-way races, and voters formed local coalitions against the National Rally. Seat outcomes therefore cannot be derived from a simple nationwide percentage.

An absolute majority requires 289 of 577 seats, and no alliance approached it alone. The left's plurality gave it a claim to lead government but not automatic authority to appoint a prime minister. The president retained constitutional appointment power, while any government needed to survive the Assembly.

Parties disagreed over coalition, programme and leadership. A shared electoral front against one opponent did not mean the participating left parties or centrists formed a governing coalition with each other.

Interior Ministry results establish the seat distribution. This item records a hung parliament after Macron's dissolution, separate from later prime-minister choices and confidence disputes. It avoids the false shorthand that France “elected” a single bloc to govern when voters instead produced fragmented legislative power.
