The crash killed Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials after their helicopter went down in mountainous terrain.

Report

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died when a helicopter crashed in East Azerbaijan province on 19 May 2024. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials and crew aboard were also killed. Search teams located the wreckage after difficult overnight operations in fog and mountainous terrain.

The delegation was returning from an event near Iran's border with Azerbaijan. Early communication described a “hard landing” while the aircraft and passengers were missing; confirmation of deaths came after rescuers reached the site. This sequence should not be rewritten as certainty available from the first report.

Iranian authorities attributed the crash to difficult weather in their final investigation and said they found no evidence of sabotage. Speculation about an attack circulated because of regional tension, but it lacked substantiated evidence and should not be elevated into the headline.

Under Iran's constitution, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber assumed interim responsibilities with approval of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and an election was required within fifty days. The supreme leader remained the highest authority, so the president's death did not create a vacancy in all state leadership.

The Iranian succession chronology begins with the crash and confirmed deaths. Raisi's human-rights record, foreign policy and the later presidential election are separate subjects. It neither turns an accidental finding into exoneration of all aviation safety questions nor assigns an unsupported perpetrator to a tragedy.
