Meta launches Threads as a new text-based social network
Published Factrail editorial research

The Instagram-linked app opened in more than one hundred countries and attracted tens of millions of sign-ups during its first days.
Report
Meta launched Threads on 5 July 2023 in initial markets, offering a text-based social network linked to Instagram accounts. Users could publish short posts, reply, follow profiles and carry their existing Instagram identity into the new service.
The launch came amid upheaval at Twitter after Elon Musk's acquisition and subsequent product changes. Threads competed for similar public conversation but began without several functions familiar on mature platforms, including robust search and some web features. Product comparison is context, not proof that every user migrated from one service to the other.
Meta reported tens of millions of sign-ups within days. Sign-up counts do not equal active or retained users, and the Instagram connection lowered the friction of creating an account. Adoption should therefore be evaluated with ongoing usage measures rather than a launch total alone.
The service was initially unavailable in the European Union while Meta considered regulatory requirements. It also announced plans to support the open ActivityPub protocol, but future compatibility was not fully implemented at launch.
Company releases and app availability establish the event. The launch-day account covers the opening of a new network, not the invention of short-form text posting or a guaranteed replacement for Twitter. Moderation, privacy, federation and commercial performance developed through later policy and engineering decisions. Account deletion rules also changed after launch and should not be inferred from the first interface.
