Modi's coalition retains Indian parliamentary majority with reduced mandate
Published Factrail editorial research

The National Democratic Alliance won enough Lok Sabha seats to govern, but the Bharatiya Janata Party lost its solo majority.
Report
India's National Democratic Alliance retained a majority in the Lok Sabha when results were counted on 4 June 2024, enabling Narendra Modi to form a third consecutive government. The Bharatiya Janata Party remained the largest party but lost the individual majority it had held since 2014.
Voting had taken place in seven phases across the country. India's first-past-the-post constituencies mean national vote share and seat share differ, and alliances aggregate parties with distinct regional bases. The NDA majority depended more heavily on partners such as the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal (United).
The opposition INDIA alliance performed much better than many exit polls predicted. Campaign issues included welfare, jobs, inflation, religion, caste, constitutional protections and Modi's leadership. No single explanation can be assigned to all regional swings without constituency and survey evidence.
The Election Commission published constituency results, after which alliance leaders selected Modi and the president invited him to form a government. The ceremonial and parliamentary process, not election-night television projections, completed the transition.
This item describes both continuity and constraint: the coalition won a governing majority, while the BJP alone did not. Later cabinet bargaining and legislation are follow-up events. It avoids falsely reporting personal direct election of the prime minister in India's parliamentary system.
Modi was sworn in after alliance partners formally backed him and the president confirmed that he could command the House. That constitutional sequence preserved continuity while showing that coalition consent, not only the BJP's seat total, sustained the government.
