Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes Japan's Noto Peninsula

Published Factrail editorial research

2024 Noto earthquake

The New Year's Day earthquake triggered tsunami warnings, fires and widespread building and infrastructure damage across the peninsula.

Report

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Japan's Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on 1 January 2024. The shallow event produced severe shaking, triggered tsunami warnings along the Sea of Japan coast and was followed by numerous aftershocks.

Buildings collapsed, fires broke out in Wajima and roads, ports, water systems and communications were damaged. The peninsula's geography and broken transport links made some communities difficult to reach. Winter conditions compounded risk for displaced residents and rescue teams.

Japan's meteorological agency initially issued its highest tsunami warning for part of the coast and later downgraded it as observations came in. Waves inundated some areas, but the earthquake's direct shaking and fire caused much of the destruction. An alert level describes forecast risk at the time, not a guaranteed wave height everywhere.

Official death figures continued rising as local authorities investigated disaster-related deaths in addition to immediate fatalities. Those categories should remain distinct. Building age, ground conditions and community isolation influenced outcomes despite Japan's strong seismic standards.

Seismological and government records establish the main shock and response. This item marks the regional disaster's onset, not every aftershock or recovery decision. It avoids treating Japan's preparedness as proof that losses were unavoidable or, conversely, assuming one earthquake can be used to judge all national seismic building practice.
