The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is a political and formerly armed movement based in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Founded in the 1970s, it played a leading role in the rebellion that ended military rule in 1991 and afterward became the dominant force within the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front coalition for much of the following decades. Following political realignment in the late 2010s, the TPLF lost its national position and centered its activity on Tigray's regional government. It was a principal party to the armed conflict in northern Ethiopia that began in 2020 between regional and federal forces, which ended with a cessation-of-hostilities agreement in 2022. The organization's legal status and designation have shifted over the course of these events.
