Not rated yet: the verified records linked to this person, without a numeric impact.

Editorial assessment (context, not the score)

The record is not a horseback proverb and not a unique author of every later Mongol sack. The heaviest documented costs are Jin and Khwarezm urban destruction, artisan levy, Xi Xia annihilation, and taught terror. The offsets are 1206, script, yam, and court cult plurality. Sons and noyans share files. Confidence is high on 1206, 1215, 1219–21, and 1227, medium on yassa reconstruction and unique integers. Confidence is stated on dated offices, books, and campaigns, not on later statues.

The power he actually held

Chinggis Khan is a steppe commander who became an imperial founder. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Genghis-Khan (opens in a new tab) and the empire article at https://www.britannica.com/place/Mongol-empire (opens in a new tab) date 1206, Jin, Khwarezm, and 1227. Cambridge Inner Asia at https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/cambridge-history-of-inner-asia-the-chinggisid-age/ (opens in a new tab) frames the Chinggisid age.

The first fact about his power is a quriltai plus a decimal army. The second is city-killing in North China and Khwarezm. The third is a courier-and-levy grid. Those are different mechanisms.

What went wrong, and what is proven

Tatar 1202, Zhongdu 1215, Bukhara and Samarkand 1220, Gurganj and Merv 1221, Xi Xia 1226–27 are dated destructions. Huge later integers are later integers. Artisan levy is unfree labour. Yassa capital headings are reconstructed. Taught terror is a policy, not a proverb.

The 1206 quriltai turned steppe coalition-building into an imperial military system

Temüjin’s rise culminated at a quriltai in 1206, when his supremacy over rival Mongol and Turkic groups was recognised and he took the title associated with Chinggis Khan. Encyclopaedia Iranica (opens in a new tab) stresses that the early biography depends heavily on the Secret History of the Mongols and later Persian material, so individual childhood episodes cannot all be treated with equal certainty. The broader political change is clearer. Defeated tribal manpower was incorporated into a growing army rather than always left as separate conquered communities, and the force was organised on a decimal basis that supported large cavalry formations and later siege operations. Campaigns against the Jin began in 1211, while the conquest of Qara Khitai in 1218 brought Mongol power into direct contact with the Khwarazmian Empire. The new imperial system therefore combined personal loyalty, military reorganisation and selective use of administrators from conquered or allied peoples rather than relying only on traditional clan structures.

The Khwarazmian war produced destruction on a scale contemporary sources struggled to count

The western campaign began after a Mongol caravan was attacked at Otrar and the Khwarazmshah’s authorities executed a Mongol envoy. Iranica dates the invasion of Transoxiana to 1219 and describes the coordinated assault that took Bukhara and Samarkand before the war spread across Khorasan Encyclopaedia Iranica (opens in a new tab). Medieval chroniclers supplied massacre totals in the millions for cities such as Nishapur and Herat, but the same modern entry warns that those numbers should not be read literally; what is secure is the extraordinary scale of killing, urban destruction and population flight. The damage extended beyond sieges because abandoned irrigation systems and qanats could collapse when rural communities fled. Genghis returned east in 1223 and died during the campaign against Western Xia in 1227. His empire continued to expand for decades, but the Khwarazmian campaign established a durable pattern: surrender could bring incorporation, resistance could trigger exemplary destruction, and conquest depended on mobile armies supported by increasingly sophisticated administrative and siege resources.
