Bolsonaro 8 January and coup-plot prosecution
Bolsonaro 8 January / coup-plot prosecution is one continuing Brazilian mechanism: the 8 January 2023 invasion of the Praça dos Três Poderes, the TSE 30 June 2023 eight-year ineligibility for the 18 July 2022 barracks-meeting remarks, the 11 September 2025 STF First Panel conviction of Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months for leading a plot to overturn the 2022 election, and later house-arrest and sentence-reduction fights that do not unwrite the conviction.

What this driver is
Bolsonaro 8 January / coup-plot prosecution is one continuing Brazilian mechanism: the 8 January 2023 invasion of the Praça dos Três Poderes, the TSE 30 June 2023 eight-year ineligibility for the 18 July 2022 barracks-meeting remarks, the 11 September 2025 STF First Panel conviction of Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months for leading a plot to overturn the 2022 election, and later house-arrest and sentence-reduction fights that do not unwrite the conviction.
Neighbouring mechanisms — COVID CPI, Amazon deforestation prints, jewelry/Saudi gift cases — can move with this file or against it. They do not replace it. A 2018 runoff photograph is not this node. This node is 8 January, the TSE bar, and the STF conviction.
It applies to Brazil from the 2022 runoff through September 2026.
The legal core is TSE’s 30 June 2023 ineligibility, the 8 January 2023 attacks on the Palácio do Planalto, Congresso and STF, PGR’s coup-plot indictment, and the STF First Panel’s 11 September 2025 4–1 conviction (Fux dissenting). A later Congress sentence-reduction statute suspended by Moraes is a neighbouring child.
Mechanism
The file moves welfare through named channels.
First, 8 January. Crowds invaded the three powers’ buildings two days after Lula’s oath. STF and PGR treated the day as part of a plot neighbourhood. Bolsonaro was in the United States. Sharing absence from Brasília is not a reason to drop later conviction rows that named him as leader of the plot.
Second, TSE bar. On 30 June 2023 the Superior Electoral Court declared him ineligible for eight years over 18 July 2022 remarks to ambassadors questioning electronic voting. That is a completed electoral-justice instrument, separate from the later criminal conviction.
Third, STF conviction. On 11 September 2025 the First Panel convicted him of coup d’état, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, criminal organisation and related counts, 27 years and three months. Agência Brasil recorded the 4–1 vote. Appeals and a 2026 Congress reduction law (Lula veto overridden, then suspended by Moraes) are children. Quote the 11 September instrument.
Fourth, custody. He began serving in late 2025 at a PF facility, then humanitarian house arrest in 2026 after illness. Moraes extended house arrest.
Fifth, command. A former president can be convicted of leading a plot. He does not sit as every 8 January rioter. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is the live 2022 winner and alleged assassination-plot target. This run references that husk. It does not mint a cleaner lula twin.
Evidence base
The best evidence is TSE, STF, Agência Brasil, and Reuters/AP/NYT same-week wires.
TSE carries the 30 June 2023 ineligibility. STF carries the 11 September 2025 votes. Agência Brasil printed the sentences. Reuters and NYT recorded 8 January 2023 and the conviction. Fux’s dissent is a neighbouring recorded position.
Evidence is strongest for TSE and STF roll-calls. It is weaker for any unique first-hour 8 January damage coefficient. It is weakest where a witch-hunt adjective is asked to replace 11 September 2025.
Effect on welfare indicators
This driver, when it actually runs, is a first-order channel into democratic-resilience series only where a sourced path exists.
An education, CPI, or WJP path does not follow from an STF conviction without a sourced channel. Missing coefficients stay missing. This catalog does not clone family-template DII onto the node.
The welfare sign of strengthening this driver is negative: a completed coup-plot conviction after 8 January. That is the opposite of treating a 2018 runoff as a unique later civic rebate.
Interactions and contested points
The mechanism interacts with Lula’s presidency, Trump neighbourhood, and a 2026 Congress reduction law. Reinforcement is obvious when 8 January and an STF conviction sit on the same person. Offsetting is the claim that a five-justice panel and a rapporteur who was an alleged target taint the conviction. Fux dissented. Store the dissent.
The strongest competing view is that 8 January was a spontaneous riot he did not author because he was in Florida. The STF named him as leader of the plot. Store both.
Established: 8 January 2023; TSE 30 June 2023 ineligibility; STF 11 September 2025 conviction 27 years 3 months. Not established: a unique later served-years coefficient after the suspended reduction law. A later full-court reversal with a date would be a new fact. It would not rename this driver as a rehab success.
What is documented
The accountability file around Jair Bolsonaro connects the aftermath of Brazil's 2022 election to the 8 January 2023 attacks in Brasília and to the alleged effort to prevent the elected government from taking power. Bolsonaro lost the October 2022 runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and left Brazil before Lula's inauguration. One week after the handover, Bolsonaro supporters invaded and vandalised Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace. Brazilian authorities prosecuted hundreds of participants. The larger case moved beyond the crowd itself: in February 2025 the prosecutor general charged Bolsonaro and allies over an alleged coup plot, and the Supreme Court later accepted charges, making the former president a defendant. By September 2025 Reuters was reporting the case approaching verdict while Bolsonaro remained under house arrest. The prosecution therefore tests two propositions at once: whether a former president can be held responsible for a documented anti-democratic plan, and whether courts can do so with procedures strong enough to withstand the claim that criminal law is being used to remove an opposition leader.
Who moves this driver
Jair Bolsonaro moves the driver through his documented post-election conduct and the acts attributed to him in the criminal case, not through the behaviour of every person who voted for him. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva belongs to the surrounding transfer context as the certified winner who took office, but the prosecution is not a welfare credit to Lula merely because his government survived. Judges, prosecutors, military officers, police commanders, and organisers should remain attached only through the specific facts establishing their roles.
Welfare pathways
The strongest pathway is Clean elections index. Electoral integrity depends not only on ballot administration but on whether losing incumbents and state institutions accept certified outcomes. A second route is Judicial constraints on the executive (V-Dem, global country mean): a court capable of trying a former executive can demonstrate constraint, but only if the proceeding remains evidence-based and legally regular. Having a say in government is the citizen-facing consequence. If votes can be nullified by force, participation loses substance; if opposition can be criminalised without proof, participation is also damaged.
What is uncertain
The existence of charges does not itself establish guilt, and a conviction does not make every political interpretation of the case correct. Brazil's polarisation creates incentives for both camps to overstate what the proceeding proves. The January 8 crowd contained different levels of intent and participation, so responsibility must not be flattened. The institutional test is narrower: what evidence ties Bolsonaro to a plan, what acts satisfy the charged offences, whether defence rights and appeals are preserved, and whether similar legal standards apply across political camps. Long-run effects on democratic indicators cannot be isolated from Congress, electoral administration, media ecosystems, military norms, and later elections.
