On 31 May 2018 a UAE court sentenced human-rights defender Ahmed Mansoor to ten years in prison on charges related to social-media activity.

Context

The Federal Supreme Court sat. Mohamed bin Zayed was already the security principal. UN special procedures criticised the case. A court sentence is a completed rights file. He did not personally write the judgment.

Labour-law changes in 2021 are a different rights path. They do not rebate this sentence.

The president of the United Arab Emirates is elected by the Federal Supreme Council of the seven emirates and is, in this case, also Ruler of Abu Dhabi and supreme commander of the armed forces. He does not write UNFCCC consensus texts by himself, IAEA operating licences, Israeli Knesset statutes, or UN panel reports.

Why it matters

The path is democratic resilience and protection of civic rights: a completed long sentence for online expression is a documented civic-space contraction.

What the sources establish

Emirates News Agency carries the official instrument or communique. Reuters records the same dated act independently.

Established: a 31 May 2018 ten-year sentence against Ahmed Mansoor, independently reported.

Not established: that every later UAE detention is this case, or a unique later press-freedom coefficient from that morning.

The court sentenced. UN procedures criticised. He did not sit as the judge.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies Ahmed Mansoor is sentenced to ten years in the UAE, not a later speech about Ahmed Mansoor is sentenced to ten years in the UAE.

Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor decree exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to He was the union’s security principal. The court sentenced. UN procedures criticised. He did not sit as the judge. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.

Human-rights defender Ahmed Mansoor was sentenced in May 2018 to a ten-year prison term and a large fine over social-media activity and criticism of the government. Amnesty International described him as a prisoner of conscience and said the prosecution punished the peaceful exercise of expression. The prosecution imprisoned a peaceful critic and narrowed civic space, while separate evidence addresses minority protection and democratic resilience. The court record does not show a new personal order by Mohamed bin Zayed.

Ahmed Mansoor was arrested on 20 March 2017 and sentenced on 29 May 2018 to 10 years in prison over social-media and communications activity; Amnesty International reported the sentence on 31 May 2018. Human Rights Watch reported on 27 January 2021 that UAE authorities had kept Ahmed Mansoor in a tiny solitary cell, deprived him of reading materials, a bed and regular family contact, and documented the State Security Agency’s culpability for his detention conditions since his arrest. Human Rights Watch’s June 2025 account of the UAE84 proceedings identifies Ahmed Mansoor as one of the activists on trial and says he received a 15-year sentence in that case.
