On 2 November 1830 Chopin left Warsaw for Vienna with Tytus Woyciechowski, carrying concert plans, days before the 29 November rising. He never returned to live in Poland. It is not the later Stuttgart news of Warsaw’s fall, and it is not a later museum of emigration. Friends in the cadet world stayed; Chopin took the coach. Elsner and the family blessed a career journey that became an exile. The row stores one exit. It does not claim he ordered anyone else to flee, and it does not treat the 1831 Paris arrival as a second departure.
Context
The November night was a cadet and urban insurrection against Nicholas I’s system in the Congress Kingdom. A twenty-year-old pianist already booked for Vienna was not a general; he also did not turn the coach around when news caught him. Great Emigration politics later made that absence a standing quarrel: art in Paris versus arms in Warsaw. Mickiewicz’s path is a neighbouring exile, not this coach. A career journey that became a life abroad is still a displacement instrument because the home city remained on the other side of a political-military line he did not recross as a resident.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
Why it matters
Worsening displacement path: a cultural worker’s life was moved permanently off the insurgent city. High confidence on the date. Modest weight: one departure is not a population transfer. Later Paris mazurkas do not rebate the exit into a patriotic statute.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Departure is not the Stuttgart étude and not a later emigration museum. Mixed effects of Chopin leaves Warsaw as the November Uprising is about to break, without joining it are separate paths.
Who was responsible

Frédéric Chopin
PersonDirect responsibility
responsibility level 0.4 · verified
He departed for Vienna with Tytus Woyciechowski on a concert tour and did not return to fight. Insurrectionists in Warsaw took the night of 29 November without him. Complex émigré, not a commander.

What the sources establish
The Institute’s calendar dates the 2 November 1830 departure and the never-return. Britannica independently states that he left Warsaw in November 1830 and did not return. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Frederic-Chopin (opens in a new tab). The records establish date and one-way exile. They do not establish a unique later refugee-count series caused by this one coach.
Established: Chopin left Warsaw on 2 November 1830 and did not return to reside. Not established: that he was ordered to leave by a government, or that every later émigré pianist repeats this coach. A contradictory passport date would change the row. A later competition in Warsaw would not.
Shared responsibility is part of Chopin leaves Warsaw as the November Uprising is about to break, without joining it. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1830-11-02 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
