On 16 October 2026, the Cockroach Janta Party called a flag-bearing Tiranga protest at Connaught Place in New Delhi while Central Park was closed for 16–17 October and police restrictions were in force in the area. Authorities cited administrative, safety and public-order concerns; organisers argued the controls suppressed peaceful political expression.
October 16 gathering, legal challenge and arrests
The use of Central Park as the proposed gathering place exposed a conflict between political assembly and the policing of Delhi's busiest commercial district. On 14 October 2026, Abhijeet Dipke announced a 5 p.m. tricolour gathering for 16 October after CJP activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were remanded to judicial custody. Their earlier encounter with authorities involved Jantar Mantar, which police had recently removed from the list of designated demonstration sites. The resulting protest was not simply a disagreement over access to a municipal park: it challenged restrictions on where a rapidly growing opposition movement could organise publicly.
On 15 October, the Delhi High Court declined a petition seeking to prevent the gathering, while recording police assurances that public order would be maintained. A Palika Bazar vendor argued that a large rally might impede business, emergency access and pedestrian movement. The police then issued a notice to Dipke identifying the commercial area's narrow access routes and proximity to government precincts as security concerns. Those arguments were distinct from the organisers' complaints about constraints on civic space.
On 16 October, police detained more than 100 people, according to the Indian Express, including Dipke and student leader Neha Bora. Protesters converged despite deployment of police and central armed personnel, and the crowd had been dispersed by approximately 7 p.m. The rally also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, bringing the question of electoral integrity into the dispute. Conflicting published crowd estimates do not change the independently reported detentions or the authorities' decision to enforce prohibitory orders.
