On 8 October 1950 Mao Zedong issued the order constituting the Chinese People’s Volunteers to enter Korea, after days of Politburo argument and cables with Stalin. Peng Dehuai was appointed commander. Chinese units crossed the Yalu in mid-October. This is a war-entry decision, not the 25 June North Korean attack and not the later armistice.

Context

Kim Il-sung had started the war with Soviet support. US and UN forces had reached the Yalu approaches. Some Chinese leaders feared US invasion; others feared a ruinous war. Stalin’s conditions on air cover shifted. Zhou handled diplomacy.
