The Reich places Lüderitz’s Angra Pequena under German protection

On 24 April 1884 Bismarck telegraphed that the acquisitions of the Bremen merchant Lüderitz at Angra Pequena (South West Africa) were under German protection. Further 1884–85 flags in Togo, Cameroon, and East Africa followed as one colonial-acquisition cluster, not five Facts. In the causal graph this event weakens Humanitarian Access, a driver that strengthens People Internally Displaced by Conflict and Violence (IDMC) — an improving welfare path.

African rulers were not equal treaty partners in the later Berlin sense of consent. This is a worsening imperial-rights instrument, not a Kulturkampf twin.

Context

Bismarck had long called colonies a luxury. Domestic colonial societies, Hamburg and Bremen firms, and European scramble after 1882 Egypt changed his calculation. The 1884–85 Berlin Africa conference, which he hosted, is part of the same acquisition season and is not split out. Later Herero and Nama genocide (1904) is after his fall; 1884 still created the Schutzherrschaft used later.

Shared responsibility is part of The Reich places Lüderitz’s Angra Pequena under German protection. Naming Otto von Bismarck does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1884-04-24 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

Why it matters

Worsening humanitarian path of colonial acquisition. High confidence on the protection order. Later massacres are not backdated as his personal 1884 killings, and 1884 is not thereby made harmless.

What the sources establish

GHDI publishes colonial-acquisition documents. DHM independently narrates German colonies. Britannica independently dates the 1884 protection of South West Africa. No Factrail original indigenous death total for 1884 is offered.

Established: imperial protection was declared over Angra Pequena in April 1884, opening German African empire under Bismarck. Not established: a 1884 body count, or that 1904 was already ordered in the telegram.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
