On 4 July 1872 the Reichstag and Bundesrat adopted a law dissolving Jesuit houses in the German Empire and excluding members of the Society of Jesus from the federal territory. Bismarck’s government framed it as defence of the state against ultramontanism. This is a Reich exceptional statute, not the Prussian May Laws of 1873.

Context

The 1870 Vatican Council’s infallibility definition had split German Catholics and frightened liberals. Windthorst’s Zentrum formed as the Catholic defence party. Falk was Prussian Kultusminister, not the sole author of a Reich law. Sharing the majority with National Liberals is required.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Why it matters

Worsening justice path: a named religious order was banned by special law. High confidence on the statute.

Shared responsibility is part of The Reich Jesuit Law expels the Society of Jesus. Naming Otto von Bismarck does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1872-07-04 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
