The Amarna letters, recovered in 1887 and written in the reign, address the Egyptian king, not Nefertiti as a great-king peer. It bounds claims of co-rule.

Context

Reliefs can show a queen smiting or officiating while letters still go to one male king. Both sources should be kept. Using only reliefs inflates her diplomatic power. Using only letters erases her ritual office.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

A limit-path, stored as worsening for concentrated kingship rather than as an insult to her.

Silence in tablets is not absence from the court.

The court is hers as queen. The letters are the king’s scribes’. Complex: her office did not equal independent diplomatic personality in this archive.
