Archaeology of Amarna’s Workmen’s Village documents a segregated labour community supplying the new capital of Akhetaten during the years Nefertiti was Great Royal Wife. Year-precision is conventional.

Context

Royal art shows a generous Aten. Village archaeology shows constrained housing and workload. Both are evidence. Neither is a GDP series. Nefertiti’s contribution is court membership in the building programme, complex not direct bricklaying.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Inequality path. Medium confidence on personal responsibility, high on the village existing.

Royal building demand is the court’s. The village evidence is the Project’s later recording of that demand’s human base.

Crowded purpose-built workers’ housing at a new capital is a plausible transmission-risk setting; osteology is evidence of load, not a diagnosed epidemic series.

What the sources establish

The Amarna Project publishes the village. The Met essay independently frames the city’s planned character.

Established: a workers’ village supported Amarna construction in her tenure. Not established: a body-count of conscripts attributable uniquely to her.
