Hicks prints KD 31–35: justice is a compact neither to harm nor be harmed, empty where no compact can be made. The dated English instrument is the Loeb. Independent natural-law courts are not this theory.
Context
A compact theory can support treaties and also dissolve duties to those outside the bargain, including animals and distant strangers. Later legal positivism sometimes cited the heading.
Epicurus is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Justice as mere bargain is a path that weakens claims of independent judicial principle.
