On 16 July 1799 the University of Helmstedt granted Gauss a doctorate in absentia for a dissertation that gave a new proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra, printed as Demonstratio nova. Johann Friedrich Pfaff was the responsible Helmstedt professor; Gauss did not sit a modern viva in a filmed room. It is not the 1801 Disquisitiones and not a later tightening of the proof in 1816 or 1849, which would be other papers if stored at all. The row stores one doctoral act. Later textbooks that call the theorem ‘Gauss’s’ are reception, not 1799.
Context
Helmstedt was the ducal Landesuniversität, a paper door for a Brunswick subject who had actually studied at Göttingen. A Latin proof about polynomial roots is education because it can be copied and attacked. Pfaff’s supervision is shared labour. The duke’s stipend that fed the candidate is the patronage colour stored on its own row. A demonstration that still assumed geometric facts later readers wanted arithmetized is a limit of the 1799 proof, not a reason to drop the dated degree.
Shared responsibility is part of Helmstedt awards Gauss a doctorate for the fundamental theorem of algebra. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1799-07-16 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
Why it matters
Improving education path: a central theorem entered print under a named proof. High confidence on 1799. Modest-to-medium weight because the theorem became standard, still not a school law. Later cleaner proofs are other people’s or later Gauss papers, not this diploma. Writers/scientists do not move macro indicators by one dissertation; the path is copyable knowledge.

He wrote the 1799 dissertation proving the fundamental theorem of algebra. Helmstedt examined and issued the degree. Complex candidate, not the university’s senate.

What the sources establish
Göttingen’s digitisation centre holds and describes Gauss’s printed mathematical works, including the doctoral cluster. MacTutor independently dates the 16 July 1799 Helmstedt degree and the fundamental-theorem proof. Official: https://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/ (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/ (opens in a new tab). The records establish degree, date, and topic. They do not establish a unique later algebra-enrolment series. A contradictory diploma date would change the row.
Established: Helmstedt doctored Gauss on 16 July 1799 for a published FTA proof. A showing that the degree was never issued would change the row. A later complex-analysis course would not.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1799 proof is not a later complex-analysis textbook. Mixed effects of Helmstedt awards Gauss a doctorate for the fundamental theorem of algebra are separate paths.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
