On 27 October 1553 Michael Servetus was burned at Champel after arrest in Geneva on 13 August. The Small Council tried and sentenced him. Calvin had denounced him, served as theological adviser, and asked that the penalty be the sword rather than fire. Attribution is shared. Servetus is not an affiliate.

Context

Britannica’s Servetus article and Geneva’s archival heading independently print the 1553 process. Catholic Vienne had already condemned him. This catalog does not make Calvin the sole hangman and does not erase his advocacy. Castellio’s later protest is reception on another name.

John Calvin’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below.

Conventional years are 1509–1564. Surviving public files are later museum pages, consistory editions, Meeter Center collections, and encyclopedias. Calvin did not typeset those later pages.

Why it matters

He denounced Servetus, testified, and asked for a sword not a fire. The Small Council sentenced. Complex shared attribution; never a colleague.

What the sources establish

AEG’s institutional portal and Britannica’s Servetus biography independently describe the 1553 Geneva trial and burning.

Established: Servetus was burned on 27 October 1553 after a council sentence Calvin advised. Not established: that Calvin sat as the sentencing magistrate.

John Calvin did not file a later UNESCO form, a later Loeb colophon, or a later museum label as a personal act. A burning is not an academy. Never list Servetus as affiliated_with.
