The Column of Marcus Aurelius on the Campus Martius, as published by Rome’s heritage administration and as included in the Historic Centre World Heritage landscape, is a spiral of the Marcomannic wars: crossings, killings, deportations.
Context
Frontier war can be defence and can be slaughter. Both can be true. Cassius Dio’s numbers are a hostile or court-adjacent source and stay on another row.
Marcus Aurelius is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Humanitarian-harm path. High confidence the monument is a war column of his wars.
A spiral is not a peace.

responsibility level 0.45 · verified
The wars were fought in his name. The marble spiral is a state victory monument. Complex: later conservators publish it.

What the sources establish
Sovrintendenza pages and UNESCO’s Rome list independently frame the column.
Established: the column narrates his northern wars in the public centre of Rome.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
