In 1981 the original equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was taken from the open Campidoglio into the Palazzo dei Conservatori for conservation, with a replica later in the square.
Context
Michelangelo’s piazza had used the bronze as civic furniture. Indoor display is a knowledge and conservation gain. Tourist crowding is not fully measured here.
Marcus Aurelius is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
High confidence on 1981.
A conserved bronze is not a pardon for the column’s captives.

The rider is his public image. The conservation and indoor museum display are Rome’s museums’.

What the sources establish
Musei Capitolini and UNESCO’s Rome inscription independently document the statue in the World Heritage landscape and museum.
Established: the original bronze was museum-housed in 1981. Not established: that Marcus commissioned Michelangelo’s piazza.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
