Picasso’s Guernica was commissioned by the Spanish Republic after the 26 April 1937 bombing and was kept out of Franco’s Spain for the rest of his life.
Context
Occupied Paris 1940–44 is a separate ambiguity row. Anti-Franco and staying in Paris can both be true. Split them.
Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
Anti-dictatorship cultural path. High confidence on the commission and the non-return under Franco.
A condition of loan is not a constitution.

He attached the mural to the Republic and to a no-Franco travel condition. Spanish democrats later received the picture after 1975.
