Standard accounts following Arabic and Latin chronicles record that in October 1187 Jerusalem surrendered to Saladin on terms of ransom rather than the 1099 massacre pattern.

Context

Terms can be real and still extractive. Hattin executions remain a different instrument.

Saladin is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

Humanitarian-access path, bounded.

Ransom is not a human-rights charter. Keep Hattin on its own row.

Who was responsible

Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

He accepted ransom terms instead of a general sack on the 1099 model. Chroniclers on both sides record it. Complex with the Hattin executions.

What the sources establish

Britannica’s 1187 siege article and Lane-Poole’s 1898 monograph independently retell the terms from chronicles.

Established: received tradition records 1187 surrender terms. Not established: that every poor resident walked free, or a unique mortality series.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
