Colorado Enacts the First US Comprehensive AI Anti-Discrimination Law
On 17 May 2024 Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 24-205, the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act, the first comprehensive US state law regulating 'high-risk' AI systems used in consequential decisions such as employment, lending and housing. It imposed notice, disclosure, impact-assessment and reasonable-care duties on AI developers and deployers to guard against algorithmic discrimination. Polis signed it 'with reservations' about a possible patchwork of state rules; enforcement was repeatedly delayed and the original act was substantially rewritten in 2026.
