The 1922 WuG book is not a 1914 autograph. The most recent verified record is “Weber joins Heidelberg legal-political advising around Versailles and war-guilt files” (1 February 1919), linked to the driver Judicial Independence.

Editorial assessment (context, not the score)

The record is not a liberal saint of science and not a cartoon nationalist of 1914 only. The heaviest documented costs are the 1895 inaugural, the 1892 Polish-labour panic, 1914 volunteer framing, 1916 war speech, 1919 guilt and Saar politics, charisma taught in 1919, and association policing of values. Those rest on MWG volumes, SEP, and the printed vocation lectures, not on pamphlets alone.

The offsets are also documents: Archiv Ethic, 1913 categories, 1917–19 lectures, 1918 parliamentary franchise argument, DGS, and unfinished WuG manuscripts honestly dated. Marianne, Sombart, Naumann, and FZ editors remain on the file.

He does not found later sociology departments and he does not sign Versailles. Confidence is high on 1895, 1917, 1919 lecture dates and on 1922 as posthumous, and medium where unique treaty clauses or factory hours are chained to an essay without lag.

What the papers actually show

Max Weber is not a ministry of the interior, and this page should not pretend he is. The usable record is chairs, Archiv essays, two Munich lectures, unfinished handbook manuscripts, and war journalism. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/weber/ (opens in a new tab) is the independent philosophical carrier. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Max-Weber-German-sociologist (opens in a new tab) is the independent biography. https://www.mohrsiebeck.com/en/series/max-weber-gesamtausgabe-mwg (opens in a new tab) is the official critical edition, not a 1922 HTML autograph of Economy and Society.

What went wrong, and what is proven

The 1895 Freiburg inaugural Der Nationalstaat und die Volkswirtschaftspolitik is a nationalist political-economy text, not a harmless method lecture. The 1892 Verein farmworker study documents rural conditions and also frames Polish seasonal labour as a national danger — split paths, one title. https://www.mohrsiebeck.com/en/book/zur-politik-im-weltkrieg-9783161447396 (opens in a new tab) (MWG I/15) dates 2 August 1914 volunteer reporting, lazarett administration, the 1 August 1916 Nürnberg war speech, and the 1917–18 Frankfurter Zeitung campaign. He did not sign the Manifesto of the 93; he did nationalise a learned voice in a long war. 1919 war-guilt articles and Heidelberg advising around Versailles fight a legal-moral docket in the name of German honour. Werturteilsstreit inside Verein and DGS polices colleagues’ sermons. Politik als Beruf on 28 January 1919 teaches charisma as well as responsibility. The 1905 Ethic close publishes a steel housing of labour. Collapse from 1897/98 is a public teaching vacancy, not a metaphor.

What improved, and how far

The offsets are also documents. 1904/05 Ethic in the Archiv is a historical essay, not a growth regression. https://archive.org/details/max-weber-1919-wissenschaft-als-beruf (opens in a new tab) is the 1919 print of the 7 November 1917 lecture; https://sociologica.unibo.it/article/view/8432 (opens in a new tab) reconstructs that night. https://archive.org/details/weber-max-1919-politik-als-beruf (opens in a new tab) is the politics lecture. 1918 parliamentary writings argue suffrage and responsible government — still a power-state liberalism. 1913 Kategorien is lifetime method; WuG manuscripts are unfinished work, not Marianne’s 1922 book treated as 1914. DGS 1909, Archiv editorship, St. Louis 1904, 1906 Russia essays, and lazarett bookkeeping are dated and shared.

Shared responsibility, and what this does not say

Marianne Weber, Jaffé, Sombart, Naumann, Troeltsch, Rickert, FZ editors, and unnamed nurses in 1914 are not extras. Later sociology departments, ‘Weberian’ bureaucracies as compliments, and the 1922 chapter order are not his handwriting as such.

What would change the picture: a 1922 WuG title page he signed as finished; a 1895 inaugural without national-power close; a measured series that can be argued, with lag, as a unique consequence of 1917 value-neutrality rather than of later faculty statutes; or a Versailles clause uniquely set by his memorandum. Until then the page refuses fake 1922-as-1914 unity and refuses fake innocence about 1895 and 1914. See also https://www.uni-heidelberg.de/en (opens in a new tab) and https://uni-freiburg.de/en/ (opens in a new tab). 1894 chair is not 1895 speech. 1917 science is not 1919 politics. 1914 hospital is not 1914 ordeal language. Lujo Brentano’s Verein, Heinrich Rickert’s values, and Joseph Schumpeter’s 1920 obituary remain named because a portrait is not a complete mechanism. Confidence belongs on each path, not in a single ‘Weberian’ adjective for later departments he did not staff.

A prolonged breakdown interrupted Weber's university career before his return to public intervention

Max Weber's scholarly career was interrupted by a severe psychological and physical breakdown beginning in the late 1890s, after a period of intense teaching and family conflict. The episode removed him from regular university duties for years and sharply changed the form of his intellectual work. The importance of that interruption is visible when the later record is set against the corpus preserved in the Max Weber Gesamtausgabe (opens in a new tab): Weber's influence did not depend on an uninterrupted professorial career. He returned through research, editorial projects, public lectures and political writing, ultimately producing some of the works for which he is best known. During the revolutionary crisis at the end of the First World War, he participated directly in debates about Germany's constitutional future. The 1898 collapse therefore belongs in the causal biography, not as an incidental health note: it broke the conventional academic trajectory, helped produce a long period outside normal teaching, and preceded a later phase in which Weber's authority rested increasingly on publication and public argument rather than on a stable chair.

The 1918–1919 political lectures translated sociological categories into arguments about democratic leadership

Germany's defeat and revolution in 1918 brought Weber into unusually direct engagement with politics. He argued over constitutional design, parliamentary responsibility and the role of leadership while workers' and soldiers' councils challenged the old imperial order. His 1919 lecture Politics as a Vocation, preserved in a digitized edition at the Internet Archive (opens in a new tab), became one of the clearest statements of his distinction between an ethic of conviction and an ethic of responsibility and of his analysis of political authority. The same period is tied to Weber's treatment of charismatic authority: legitimacy could arise not only from tradition or legal-rational rules but from followers' belief in the exceptional qualities of a leader. That concept was analytical rather than an endorsement of personal rule, and it was developed amid the collapse of imperial authority and experiments with councils, parties and new constitutional institutions. The consequence was lasting: Weber's vocabulary for bureaucracy, legitimacy, charisma and responsible political action became tools for analyzing modern states long after the specific German conflicts of 1918–1919 had ended.
