On 5 April 1976 militia and police cleared Tiananmen Square of crowds mourning Zhou Enlai and criticizing the Cultural Revolution leadership. The Politburo, with Mao Zedong’s authority after he had been shown reports, labelled the movement counter-revolutionary and stripped Deng Xiaoping of remaining posts on 7 April. This is Mao’s last major political intervention, not the 1989 massacre and not Hua’s October 1976 coup against Jiang Qing.

Context

Zhou had died on 8 January 1976. Qingming wreaths became a proxy referendum on the Cultural Revolution. Mao was ill; his nephew and the palace staff filtered paper. Jiang Qing’s group pushed a hard verdict. Sharing the square-clearing with militia commanders does not make the verdict un-Maoist.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
