Excavations at the Villa of the Papyri begin to recover carbonised Epicurean rolls
From 1752 Bourbon excavations at Herculaneum recovered carbonised papyrus rolls later identified as an Epicurean working library, including Philodemus and some of On Nature. Context
Many rolls were destroyed by early unrolling. Later Oxford and Naples imaging saved more.
Epicurus is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
A carbonised library find is a primary-text access path. It is not an autograph of every line.
