Species Plantarum presents a closed world-flora of a few thousand names as if the list were nearly done
In 1753 Species Plantarum listed a few thousand plants and carried Linnaeus’s estimate that flowering plants were fewer than ten thousand, a closed-world pose that made local knowledge outside the book look like leftover curiosity. In the causal graph this event weakens Digital Learning Access, a driver that weakens Learning Poverty Rate (low- and middle-income countries) — a worsening welfare path.

In 1753 Species Plantarum listed a few thousand plants and carried Linnaeus’s estimate that flowering plants were fewer than ten thousand, a closed-world pose that made local knowledge outside the book look like leftover curiosity. Later botany found an order of magnitude more species. That later count is not his act; the underestimate in 1753 is. Colonial ‘discovery’ rhetoric fed on the idea that the world’s plants were a short list to finish.
Context
A portable flora must end. Ending as if nature ended is the welfare issue. Students carried the estimate into the field as licence to rename what people already used. Printers shared the volume. Sharing does not erase the estimate.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Closed-list rhetoric is not the binomial access Fact and not ICN. Mixed effects of Species Plantarum presents a closed world-flora of a few thousand names as if the list were nearly done are separate paths.
Why it matters
Education-access weakening of modest weight, medium confidence, split from binomial gain.
The contribution type is direct. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
Who was responsible
Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.
Carl Linnaeus
PersonDirect responsibility
responsibility level 0.24 · verified
He estimated fewer than ten thousand plant species and printed six thousand names as the world’s flora. Correspondents already knew the underestimate.

What the sources establish
BHL at https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/13829 (opens in a new tab) is the 1753 text whose scale is inspectable. Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus (opens in a new tab) treats Species Plantarum as a world flora of known plants, which is exactly the closed-list pose.

Established: the 1753 flora under-counted the living world and spoke as a world catalogue. Not established: a unique classroom that failed a later exam because of the estimate. Contribution is recorded as He estimated fewer than ten thousand plant species and printed six thousand names as the world’s flora. Correspondents already knew the underestimate. The impact note is A catalogue sold as nearly complete can weaken knowledge access by teaching students that unnamed local plants are extra, not central. The dated heading stays Species Plantarum presents a closed world-flora of a few thousand names as if the list were nearly done on 1753-05-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.
Shared responsibility is part of Species Plantarum presents a closed world-flora of a few thousand names as if the list were nearly done. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1753-05-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
