On 31 October 1517 Martin Luther issued Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum, the Ninety-five Theses, as a Wittenberg theology professor. Whether they were nailed to the Castle Church door is a later image; the dated act is the Latin disputation text and its rapid printing in German lands.
Context
Albert of Mainz's indulgence campaign, farmed with the Fugger bank and preached by Johann Tetzel, is the immediate money-and-penance machine. Luther wrote as an Augustinian doctor, not as a prince. The theses are academic articles, not a territorial church.
Why it matters

What the sources establish
The Hanover English text of the theses and luther.de chronology establish the 1517 Wittenberg act and the printed spread. They do not prove a specific hammer-and-nail minute. Wikipedia is not used as a causal source.
Established: 1517 theses text and circulation. Not established: that Luther intended a new church on that day; that nailing is photographically proven. Confidence high on the text, medium on the door.
The event remains dated 1517-10-31. Martin Luther's documented role is: He authored and circulated the theses as Wittenberg professor; printing spread them beyond the door. A public academic challenge to indulgence preaching opened vernacular debate on repentance and money in the church. Later Lutheran churches, later princes, and later national myth are not this event.
