Standard reconstruction places Tacitus’s quaestorship in the early 80s, under Vespasian or Titus, as the first rung that put him in the Senate. Histories 1.1 says he owed his start to Vespasian, his promotion to Titus, and a further step to Domitian. He did not elect himself. Context
The imperial Senate was not a modern parliament. Democratic resilience here is senatorial membership as a public speaking-and-judging body, modestly. Exact year of quaestorship is inferred from the later praetorship of 88 and typical intervals. That uncertainty is stored, not filled with a fake ISO day.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Mixed effects of Tacitus holds the quaestorship in the later Vespasianic or early Domitianic cursus, entering the Senate are separate paths.
Why it matters
A new man (or near-new man) entering the Senate is a small access path. Medium confidence on the office; low on 81 as against 80 or 82. Later ‘novus homo’ slogans are not a statute.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Entry magistracy of the senatorial cursus under the Flavians. The emperor’s grant of latus clavus is the usual gate. Complex and thinly dated.

What the sources establish
Livius and Dickinson independently reconstruct the Flavian start from Histories 1.1 and the 88 praetorship. Britannica’s career sketch aligns. The Latin of Histories 1.1 is on Latin Library and LacusCurtius. No quaestorian inscription is required for the received cursus.
Established as received: Vespasian started him; quaestorship before 88. Not established: exact year, province if any, or a unique vote. Conventional 81. Not the consulship of 97.
Shared responsibility is part of Tacitus holds the quaestorship in the later Vespasianic or early Domitianic cursus, entering the Senate. Naming Tacitus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 0081-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
