Bashar al-Assad's government loses Damascus and collapses

Opposition forces entered the capital after a rapid nationwide advance, while Assad fled to Russia and decades of family rule ended.
Report
Bashar al-Assad's government lost control of Damascus on 8 December 2024 as opposition forces entered the Syrian capital after a rapid offensive. Assad left the country and received asylum in Russia, ending more than fifty years of rule by his family.
Government military positions collapsed across major cities in the preceding days, and Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he was ready to cooperate with a transition. Prisoners were released from detention sites, including Sednaya, as families searched for people disappeared by the security system.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham led the principal offensive with other armed groups, while distinct factions advanced in the south and east. “Opposition” is therefore a coalition description rather than one unified organization. HTS's designated-terrorist history remained relevant to questions about governance and rights.
The end of effective Assad control did not immediately create a stable, representative national government or resolve territorial disputes involving Kurdish-led forces, Turkey, Israel and other actors. Foreign military actions continued, and civilians faced both relief and uncertainty.
Visual evidence, opposition entry and Russian confirmation of Assad's departure establish the collapse. This item records the change of national power, not a completed democratic transition. Accountability for war crimes, detainee records and reconstruction are follow-up processes that cannot be inferred from the fall of the capital alone.
