The former Mexico City mayor won a landslide to become the country's first woman president and first Jewish person elected to the office.
Report
Claudia Sheinbaum won Mexico's presidential election on 2 June 2024 with a large majority over Xochitl Galvez and Jorge Alvarez Maynez. The result made Sheinbaum the first woman elected president of Mexico and the first person of Jewish family background to hold the office.
Sheinbaum campaigned as the continuity candidate of Morena and outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, while presenting her own scientific and administrative experience. Voters also elected Congress and thousands of local offices, producing separate mandates with important implications for constitutional reform.
The campaign occurred amid high levels of violence against local candidates and continuing concern about organized crime. The national presidential result cannot justify an attempt to generalize safety or fairness across every local contest. Election authorities documented incidents and completed the official count.
Galvez represented a coalition of former rival parties. She conceded after preliminary results showed a decisive gap. A landslide is an electoral description, not proof of support for every future policy or of one uniform motive among tens of millions of voters.
The National Electoral Institute and tribunal processes establish the outcome. Sheinbaum took office in October, so this item stops at election. Cabinet appointments, judicial reform and security strategy are later decisions that cannot be projected retrospectively onto the 2 June mandate.
Sheinbaum is a trained energy engineer and climate scientist as well as a career politician. Those credentials are part of her biography, but scientific training does not pre-validate the evidence or outcomes of every policy adopted by her administration.
