The power he actually held
Anwar Ibrahim has been prime minister of Malaysia since 24 November 2022. The Constitution makes the prime minister the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s advice-giver who chairs Cabinet. It does not make him the author of a Bank Negara rate, a Johor assembly gazette, or a US statute. Independent wires, including Reuters on the oath (opens in a new tab), record the same dated appointment.
That limit is the first fact about his power. The second is that a 1999–2018 prosecution or pardon cluster is not a 2023 subsidy. The third is that as of 27 August 2026 he remains in office. A Bloomberg leak that he is said to mull a 2027 date is not a completed dissolution.
What went wrong, and what is proven
The sharpest documented costs that are dated and named begin before this premiership. Mahathir sacked him on 2 September 1998. ISA detention on 20 September 1998 produced the black-eye court appearance; a later police-chief admission sits on that beating, not as a unique later CPI. The 14 April 1999 corruption conviction is a completed High Court instrument he has always called a conspiracy. The 10 February 2015 Federal Court sodomy judgment sent him back to prison for five years. Those are court rows. They are not 2023 diesel.
In office the household-cost cluster is early-term price weather, diesel retargeting from 10 June 2024, the March 2024 service-tax lift to 8 percent, and the 1 July 2025 SST expansion. RP4 electricity from 1 July 2025 raised the base tariff even as low-use incentives were named. He did not sit as TNB.
Civic and coalition costs are also dated. He named Ahmad Zahid Hamidi deputy prime minister while graft files ran — appointment is not a completed theft judgment against Zahid and not a completed personal conviction of Anwar. The 1975 were banned after an on-stage kiss. Section 377 was left standing. The 12 August 2023 six-state map gave Perikatan 146 of 245 seats. Sabah, 29 November 2025 kept GRS on top. Johor, 11 July 2026 cut Pakatan to eight of 56. He does not sit as those menteri besar.
What improved, and how far
The 15 March 1991 finance appointment is a completed 1990s portfolio, remaining 1998 sacking named. The 16 May 2018 full royal pardon restored eligibility; the palace instrument is not stored here as a finding of innocence. GE15, 19 November 2022 made Pakatan the largest bloc in a hung parliament. The 24 November oath and 19 December confidence motion are completed rotation-and-majority instruments.
Budget 2023, Ekonomi MADANI on 27 July 2023, NIMP 2030 on 1 September 2023, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap are completed frameworks, not unique later GDP coefficients. STR cash is a completed transfer brand. Progressive wage is a completed floor path. Budi95 from 30 September 2025 cut the citizen RON95 print to RM1.99 while non-citizens paid nearer RM2.60. ASEAN chair 2025 is a completed diplomatic host year. Gaza-aid pledges are dated humanitarian instruments. 1MDB-era recovery on his watch is a completed asset-and-MACC weather row: Anwar is not the court that convicted Najib.
Shared responsibility, and what the score does not say
The score does not say that every litre after 10 June 2024 is a unique later conviction of a smuggling cabal. It does not convert a royal pardon into a 1999 acquittal. It does not convert Zahid’s appointment into a completed personal theft by the prime minister. It does not convert a 2026 Johor loss into a federal resignation. Confidence is high on Istana Negara, SPR returns, and MOF gazettes, and medium where later CPI, MACC files, and a 2027 ballot sit between a speech and a welfare indicator.

A prime minister is powerful enough to own diesel, SST, MADANI, and the unity oath. He is not powerful enough to be the unique author of every Bank Negara rate, every PAS hudud gazette, or every 1MDB trial page, and the dossier keeps that line visible. Keep 2 September 1998 off 10 June 2024. Keep 10 February 2015 off Budi95. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a Reformasi halo and the alternative to a cartoon.
The 2022 oath, the 2024 diesel float, and the 2026 Johor return are different dates. Treat them as texts. A 2027 ballot is not a certificate. He is still prime minister in August 2026. Zahid, MITI, MACC, BNM, and the states remain on the file so a brand cannot swallow them.
