On 14 April 1999 the Kuala Lumpur High Court convicted Anwar of corruption (abuse of power) and sentenced him to six years. He denied the charges and called them a conspiracy. The later sodomy trial is a neighbour. A 2018 pardon is a child palace row, not this verdict’s unique acquittal.

Context

ISA detention sat as parent. International observers called the trial political. He did not sit as the High Court. Neighbouring 2015 Federal Court is a later separate sodomy instrument.

ISA 1998 is the parent custody row. Federal Court 2015 is a later separate sexual-offence instrument. Pardon 2018 is a child eligibility row.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia advises the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, chairs Cabinet, and is appointed under Articles 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution. He does not write Bank Negara Malaysia policy rates, does not sit as every state menteri besar, and does not author a United States or China statute. A 1999–2018 prosecution or pardon cluster is not a 2023 subsidy. Allegation is not a completed personal conviction unless a court so held. As of 27 August 2026 he remains prime minister.

Why it matters
