OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle announce Stargate AI infrastructure project

OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle announced the Stargate infrastructure project at the White House on 21 January 2025. The partners said a new company would invest 100 billion dollars initially and potentially up to 500 billion over four years in artificial-intelligence data centres and supporting systems in the United States.

SoftBank was assigned financial responsibility and OpenAI operational responsibility, with Masayoshi Son as chairman. Oracle, Arm and technology partners were expected to supply infrastructure. Construction already under way in Texas was presented as the first site.

“Up to” is a ceiling or ambition, not proof that the full amount was financed, contracted or spent on announcement day. Power supply, chips, land, permits, customer demand and capital structure determine delivery. Company statements about jobs and strategic leadership are forecasts requiring later measurement.

President Trump supported the project and described efforts to ease development, but Stargate was announced as a private-sector venture rather than a direct federal appropriation of 500 billion dollars. Government policy and company investment remain separate sources of authority and risk.

The venture's name reused an earlier internal OpenAI infrastructure concept but represented a newly announced corporate structure. Similar naming cannot justify an attempt to merge unrelated planning documents or infer that every prior estimate became a binding commitment.
