Prabowo Subianto 2024 presidential campaign

The defence minister won a first-round majority with Gibran Rakabuming Raka, avoiding a runoff in the world's third-largest democracy.

Report

Prabowo Subianto won Indonesia's presidential election held on 14 February 2024, receiving enough votes nationally and across provinces to avoid a runoff. His running mate was Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of outgoing President Joko Widodo.

Prabowo, a former general and defence minister, had lost two previous presidential contests. Allegations concerning abuses during the Suharto era remained part of public debate; Prabowo denied wrongdoing and was not convicted. Reporting his biography should preserve both documented claims and legal status.

Gibran's eligibility followed a controversial Constitutional Court ruling that created an age exception for elected officials. The court's ethics council later found the chief justice, Gibran's uncle, committed a serious ethical violation. That did not by itself invalidate every vote, but it is relevant context for institutional concerns.

Election authorities certified the result, and the Constitutional Court rejected challenges alleging state interference and electoral violations. Dissenting opinions and observer findings should be distinguished from the binding outcome.

The Indonesian timeline fixes the election victory, not the October inauguration or later government performance. It establishes a democratic result while avoiding the inference that a majority erased controversy about campaign advantage, human-rights history or the outgoing president's political role.

Prabowo's first-round majority was calculated from the valid national count and the required provincial distribution. That rule prevented a runoff and distinguished the result from opinion polling or unofficial “quick counts” published before certification.
