From 1968 the Avicenna Latinus series (Van Riet and successors, later at Brill) issued critical Latin of Shifa books, a completed philological factory. The dated start used here is 1968. Avicenna did not collate Louvain. Better Latin lets historians separate Gerard, Alpago, and school glosses.

Context

Critical Latin can undermine pious faculty legend. That is a feature. High confidence on the series as a public scholarly machine.

Avicenna is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

A 1968 critical-Latin series is a philological access path, not a 1150 autograph of Gerard.
