First grain ship departs Ukraine under the Black Sea corridor
On 3 August 2022 the first commercial vessel carrying Ukrainian grain departed the Black Sea under the new initiative, with the UN and Turkey commended for the mediation. The corridor went on to enable the export of nearly 33 million metric tonnes of grain and foodstuffs to dozens of countries before Russia declined to renew the arrangement in July 2023. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement welcoming the first departure and crediting the UN and Turkish facilitation.
