In 2023 the Nuevas Ideas Assembly enacted a territorial reform reducing El Salvador’s municipalities from 262 toward 44. Local opposition called it a check-and-balance cut.

Context

The 2024 municipal elections sat under the new map. Neighbouring 2021 supermajority is the parent. He did not sit as every mayor.

The President of El Salvador heads the executive, commands the armed forces, and can request a state of exception that the Legislative Assembly must approve and extend.
