Identity and office
Valery Gerasimov has been chief of the General Staff since 9 November 2012. The president is commander-in-chief. The chief of the General Staff is the operational-command face.
The war is one driver. This page reuses ukraine-war. It does not mint a second war. It does not hang 2014 or 2022 on territorial-revisionism. It does not dump these events onto Soviet-scope civic rows as a primary home.
He was already chief of the General Staff on 24 February 2022. Reuters recorded the appointment the same day. Surovikin is named as an unresolved person candidate. This run does not mint a page for him.
On 24 June 2023 Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner column seized Rostov and said it wanted Shoigu and the chief of the General Staff. Associated Press and Reuters recorded the mutiny. He remained in office. Prigozhin is unresolved. Sergei Shoigu is already a public page as the ministerial counterpart.
On 12 May 2024, when Shoigu left the defence ministry, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Gerasimov would remain chief of the General Staff and that no change was foreseen. Continuity of operational command is the fact, not a completed removal.
Documented benefits
The offsets that a commissioned-positive portrait would lead with are real only where dated, and they are thin on this chain. A 2013 essay and parade-ground rank are not measured welfare rebates of overall command of an invasion. This page does not invent a doctrine-halo.
Contributions and limits of responsibility
He received the overall-commander appointment and remained the named general-staff target of a mutiny. The president ordered the war. The defence minister ran the ministry. Sharing execution is not a reason to drop the row. It is a reason not to treat every later glide-bomb as a personal homicide coefficient from 11 January 2023.
Causal chain through facts
The January 2023 appointment, the June 2023 mutiny, and the May 2024 continuity confirmation all sit on one Ukraine war. He connects to that mechanism only through dated facts.
What the score does not say
This page does not promise an exact number. Direction on this chain is negative: the documented instruments are overall command of an invasion and continuity after a mutiny. A later genuine removal, a completed ICC judgment, or a measured series that can be argued as a consequence of these instruments would be a different fact with a different date. Surovikin and Prigozhin remain names on this file, not invented biographies.
