On 26 June 2024 Bolivian army units led by General Juan José Zúñiga rammed an armoured vehicle into the Casa Grande del Pueblo in Plaza Murillo. President Luis Arce called it an attempted coup, appointed new commanders, and Zúñiga was arrested the same evening. Before the arrest Zúñiga told reporters, without offering evidence, that Arce had asked him to stage a show of force to boost popularity.

Context

Zúñiga had been dismissed as army commander the day before after comments about Evo Morales. Del Castillo said injuries proved it was not a drill. Zúñiga remains unresolved. Arce did not sit as every soldier in the square.

MAS fracture is parent weather. 14 November 2024 TCP is a later child. Store the ram and the unevidenced claim as one dated hour, not as a unique later judgment. Keep Zúñiga’s units ram the presidential palace; Arce calls a coup and the general is arrested on 2024-06-26 separate from neighbouring 26 June 2024 palace hour, 14 November 2024 TCP MAS resolution, 14 May 2025 withdrawal, 17 August 2025 first round, 8 November 2025 handover, and 10 December 2025 arrest.

The president of Bolivia is head of state, head of government, and commander-in-chief. He can appoint military commanders, propose budgets, and stand as a MAS candidate. He does not sit as a TCP magistrate, a TSE precinct printer, or a BCB teller.

Why it matters

The path is polarisation and MAS fracture: a completed palace assault with an unevidenced self-coup claim sitting as a neighbouring allegation.

What the sources establish

Presidency of the Plurinational State of Bolivia carries the official instrument or communique. Reuters records the same dated act independently.

Established: Units rammed the palace on 26 June 2024; Arce called a coup; Zúñiga was arrested the same evening and alleged, without evidence, that Arce had asked for a popularity show.

Not established: A unique later self-coup judgment from this page, or a unique injury integer as Contribution.size.

Zúñiga led the units. Prosecutors opened a case. The unevidenced claim remains Zúñiga’s.. A later repeal, court stay, or successor order would be a different Fact with a different date. That pair identifies Zúñiga’s units ram the presidential palace; Arce calls a coup and the general is arrested, not a later speech about Zúñiga’s units ram the presidential palace; Arce calls a coup and the general is arrested.

Co-authors and later implementers named in Context remain on the file. If a later repeal, stay, or successor instrument exists, it needs its own date and its own row. The contribution described on this Person row is limited to He was commander-in-chief and appointed replacement commanders. Zúñiga led the units. Prosecutors opened a case. The unevidenced claim remains Zúñiga’s. That limit is the alternative to treating office-holding as authorship of every later series.
